bryan.thebscp.com | Hack #1 | Fast Network Folders
Do you share folders on your home network? And do you use the My Network Places to view those folders? If you do, you probably have noticed a lag when you go to view those folders. When you go to open a folder on another PC, Windows checks the other PC’s scheduled tasks. Who knows why but it sure slows down the speed. Here is a registry hack to remove the task of checking the scheduled hack.
WARNING: Be careful while in the registry. If you should change the wrong option, you could prevent your PC from starting up. I suggest printing this out before proceeding.
1. To open the registry editor, click Start > Run. Once the prompt comes up type in regedit in the Open dialogue.
2. Open the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
3. Delete this key: {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
4. Close the Registry editor and reboot your machine.
Once your machine reboots, go to My Network Places and check how fast the folders will load. If you don’t see an increase in speed, your networking speeds are causing slow load times also.
If you have any questions, e-mail me at bryan@thebscp.com.

Golden Palace Pays $7,600 For Mystery Envelope
View the eBay Auction.
Internet casino GoldenPalace.com has bought a mysterious envelope for $7,600. The one-of-a-kind eBay auction has received an incredible amount of attention, as 117,000 people visited the “Mystery Envelope†page over the course of the auction. That kind of traffic is sure to bring the attention of GoldenPalace.com, who outbid 149 other curious would-be buyers. The seller refuses to say what is in the actual envelope, and now that GoldenPalace.com has it, time will tell if they choose to disclose the contents of this mysterious package to the world.
Hopefully when they get it, they will tell us what was in it here.

marv on record, archive: Burning through Napster’s collection, free, Part 3
Whether or not AOL succeeds in blocking Winamp’s “music-copying feature”, a faster way to get the job done has surfaced.
A program called Virtuosa makes no distinction between DRMed files and non DRMed files when converting to other formats. It can convert an entire protected WMA to WAV in just a few seconds and encode to MP3 in just a few more, depending on the speed of your computer (Try the “re-recording the music as it plays” argument now!). The after your trial, the full version costs $40, so if you want the best free solution, Winamp Output Stacker is still where it’s at.

BetaNews | XM to Increase Monthly Fees
In an unexpected move, XM Satellite Radio increased its monthly access fee to $12.95 per month, in line with its competitor SIRIUS. The change will take effect April 2; however, the company said customers who sign up for a prepaid plan before that date would be able to lock in the old $9.99 rate from anywhere between one to five years.
While the new rate is nearly $3 more, XM sweetened the deal for its users. All basic customers will now have access to XM Radio Online, formerly a $3.99 per month premium service. XM Online allows customers to listen to programming over a broadband connection.
Also joining the basic lineup is High Voltage, Opie and Anthony’s XM channel.

CORRECTING and REPLACING T-Mobile Statement on Security and Privacy
T-MOBILE STATEMENT ON SECURITY AND PRIVACY
T-Mobile cares greatly about protecting the security and privacy of our valued customers. We want to ensure our customers that protecting their information is a top priority for the company. Like many organizations, T-Mobile is very concerned by the growing phenomenon of personal data being illegally sought and distributed.
“We are aggressively investigating the illegal dissemination of information over the Internet of T-Mobile customers’ personal data,” said Sue Swenson, chief operating officer, T-Mobile USA, Inc.
T-Mobile is actively working with federal law enforcement agencies to investigate any criminal activity we uncover that impacts our customers, including vandalism, theft or exposing of personal data, and help bring those responsible to justice. In addition, the company will initiate a consumer education campaign designed to help inform customers on steps they can take to help secure their own personal data.
Along with the considerable resources T-Mobile has and will continue to dedicate to customer security, there are some specific actions we recommend customers take to help protect their mobile phone accounts and personal data.
– T-Mobile customers should ensure they utilize passwords and change them frequently to safeguard personal information in the following three areas:
– On my.t-mobile.com – the Web self-service tool.
– Attached to their account, when calling a Customer Service Representative.
– On their voicemail box.
– Be sure the password to access my.t-mobile.com has a combination of letters and numbers.
– Change passwords at least every 60 days; never give out passwords, even to friends or family; and memorize passwords.
– If a device is lost, or notice suspicious activity on an account, call T-Mobile immediately.
