Proactive security update fixes bug prior to any known exploits

March 23, 2005, (Mountain View, CA). The Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving choice and promoting innovation on the Internet, today announced a security update for its Firefox Web browser. The update is a proactive security release to patch a bug identified by Internet Security Systems, a premier security research, products, and services company. No known exploits of the bug have been reported prior to the update’s release.

“The Mozilla Foundation is deeply committed to providing its users with the safest Internet experience possible,” said Chris Hofmann, director of engineering for the Mozilla Foundation. “To deliver our users the experience they deserve, we must stay ahead of the curve in patching potential vulnerabilities. For example, the bug patched in this update has no known real world exploits, and we were able to provide a quick response.”

The Mozilla Foundation evaluates security issues on an ongoing basis and will issue security updates as warranted. Users are encouraged to download the software updates at www.mozilla.org.

Firefox has been widely praised for its stability, trustworthiness and innovative features including tabbed browsing, live bookmarks, built-in pop-up blocking, and hundreds of available extensions. SC Magazine, a leading security magazine, recently awarded the Mozilla Foundation with its Editor in Chief award. The browser has been downloaded more that 30 million times and is available in 28 languages.

California University Computer System Hacked

Colleges and universities around the country will likely be guarding their computer networks a little closer from now on, after several institutions’ systems were hacked this month.

Officials at California State University, Chico, announced that that they were the latest victims of hackers who had broke into a housing and food service computer system that contained vital information about 59,000 current, former and prospective students, as well as faculty and staff.

The school said most of the records belonged to students who had attended classes within the past five years. Officials said they would notify those affected by the breach. There is no indication that the hackers were targeting confidential information, school officials said.

Acetone In Fuel Said to Increase Mileage 15-35%

Acetone (CH3COCH3), also called dimethylketone or propanone, is a product that can be purchased inexpensively in most locations around the world, such as in the common hardware store. Added to the fuel tank in tiny amounts, acetone aids in the vaporization of the gasoline or diesel, increasing fuel efficiency, engine longevity, and performance — as well as reducing hydrocarbon emissions.

Banks on high security alert against key loggers
The National Hi-Tech Crime Unit and the City of London Police have been investigating the discovery of key logging software on Sumitomo’s systems since October.

Another UK bank discovered that 80 of its Swift money transfer terminals had been fitted with hardware key loggers in December, according to reports.

The attacks bear all the hallmarks of an inside job rather than an external hacking attempt, said security and banking experts this week.

Novell Says Its Next Linux Desktop Will Surpass Windows

SALT LAKE CITY—While Microsoft still has the monopoly on the desktop market with its Windows operating system, Novell is readying new features and functionality that it believes will propel its Novell Linux Desktop offering into the mass market.

The current Novell Linux Desktop 9, which was released last November, is targeted not at the mass market but rather at those customers with more contained workloads.

But all of that is set to change with the next version of the product, Novell Linux Desktop 10, scheduled for release next year.
