July 2005

Wow.. Defcon is wild…. I have been taking a bunch of pics, taking some notes, and handing out a TON of t-shirts… If you happen to be at defcon, and want a tshirt, I would suggest you find me soon, I am running out! (Want to know how to find me? Look for the guy wearing the I-hacked Tshirt and the Boulevard hat w/a black backpack) Or if I happen to be around you and hear you talking about I-hacked, I will give you one (several have been given out this way)

Ok, I am sorry for the lack of updates, but I dont want to do much on their network here.. I dont want to upload any images/login to my ftp/or login to any sites.. Trust me, there is an ENTIRE board listing usernames & passwords that have already been sniffed off this open wifi network.. haha and there is a pretty funny story in there as well.

So, look for some good pics, stories, and articles when I get back! As for now, I am drinking my share of Guiness and Fosters!

[edit]
oh, if you have sent me an email requesting info, submitting info, or asking me a question, I have received it, but I will not be responding until I get home… Thanks!

Wow..

It is 3:34 my time, and I have had quite a day. Yes, I am writing this after.. Um lets just say A HUNDRED BEERS. So if this doesnt make any sense.. Well — You know why. Let me tell you something, next year you need to go to Blackhat. The staff at Blackhat have done a great job setting everything up. The briefings were interesting and at the end of the day they had an open bar. Yes that was sweet! Ok, back to what I did today, Here are the briefings that I went to today:

  1. The Social Engineering Engagement Methodology - Joseph Klein
  2. Attacking Web Services: The Next Generation of Vulnerable Enterprise Apps- Alex Stamos & Scott Stender
  3. Owning Anti-Virus: Weaknesses in a Critical Security Component- Alex Wheeler & Neel Mehta
  4. Can You Really Trust Hardware? Exploring Security Problems in Hardware Devices- Joe Grand
  5. Beyond EIP- spoonm & skape

You can read all about these briefings here, but let me give tell you.. These presenters were on their game. I was totally impressed by each presenter… But spoonm & skape blew me away. wow. These college students (who btw wrote metasploit) showed me some things with metasploint that I couldnt believe. Lets just say some very cool things are coming down the pipe. While day one was winding down, they had a open bar and a few of us were chatting.. That is when one of the guys we were with noticed a few “celebs”.. Anyway after a few words, I now have signed books AND pictures with Kevin Mitnick and Jonny Long Grand (of google hacking fame)

Ok.. Well that is my update for today. I need to go to bed if I plan to be alive tomorrow. Damn, 7:00 is going to come soon.

July 26th, 2005: I am packing my stuff right now, getting on the plane here in a few hours.. Then it is off to vegas. I am bringing a pretty full “hack-kit” so I should be having quite a bit of fun in vegas.. We shall see.

I read an interesting note the other day. It said, if you are in vegas during the time of Defcon, to NEVER USE AN ATM near Alexis Park. Last year one Defcon goer noticed Three (yes 3!!!) taps on the line on the back of the ATM. Hopefully I will see something like that and will take a nice pic! :)
Oh well, back to packing.. Will update when there is something to update about.

Techdirt:Now Cantenna’s Are Illegal Too? Why Don’t They Just Outlaw WiFi?

According to the head of the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force, the popular “cantenna” device is completely illegal. For those who don’t know, someone a while back worked out that you could boost the range of your WiFi router with a Pringle’s can. It requires a bit of work, so a small operation sprung up to sell Cantennas. They’re quite popular with people who want to spread WiFi around a house where the basic router won’t reach certain parts of it. Hell, even CompUSA sells them! But, according to this “high tech” police officer: “They’re unsophisticated but reliable, and it’s illegal to possess them.” The article includes a story about how the police arrested a high school student for breaking into his school’s network to change his grades and they (gasp!) found a cantenna in his room! Again, the crime he committed has nothing to do with having an antenna booster, but that doesn’t stop the reporter and the cop from talking about the evils of connecting to WiFi networks.

Gear Live | How Google Maps Got Me Out Of A Traffic Ticket
T

he Judge stopped and asked me how could there be an oncoming vehicle if the street was only one way. I stated that it was indeed a two way street. The officer reiterated that it was only a one way. So who was the judge to believe? I was desperate for proof so I did the unthinkable: I whipped out my notebook. I was very lucky to find an extremely bad connection via Wi-Fi. I pulled up Firefox and when to maps.google.com. I typed up the intersection and zoomed in as close as possible:

Hahaha this is great, if you have not read it yet, do it! :D

360hacker.net » Xbox 360 disassembled! Motherboard pic leaked » Xbox 360 hacker hacking mods modding modchip games news blog forums

xavxbox.com has what they claim are pictues of the Xbox 360 motherboard. Their site says the GPU is under the left fan, and the CPU under the right. To translate roughly from French, they also state , “Soon on the site, a tutorial for disassembling the Xbox 360…” An unknown source had sent in the pic, but given xavxbox is a hacking site, hopefully someone like Team Xecuter is hard at work
