NEW ORLEANS - In an attempt to boost its stalled economy, the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans is starting the nation’s first free wireless Internet network owned and run by a major city.

Mayor Ray Nagin made the announcement at a late morning news conference.

Similar projects elsewhere have been stalled by stiff opposition from telephone and cable television companies aimed at discouraging competition from public agencies.

Nagin said the system started operation Tuesday in the central Business District and the French Quarter. It is to be available throughout the city in about a year.

The system uses hardware mounted on street lights to cover the city.

Most of the equipment was donated by three companies: Intel Corp., Tropos Networks and Pronto Networks.

The system will operate at 512 kilobits per second as long as the city remains under a state of emergency.

That will be slowed once the state of emergency is over — that date has not been determined — to 128 kbps in accordance with state law, which restricts government-owned Internet service.

I ran across this site some time ago, and had marked it as a site that I wanted to talk about. However you know how things go, it slipped through the cracks. Well recently a buddy of mine (Hi Nate) decided to upgrade a tivo, and was asking me for advice.. I dug up this site and sent it to him. This site will walk you through everything you need to do — by model of tivo!

A Dutch company has launched a mediacenter under the name of Lamabox, which takes all its content from P2P networks such as Edonkey, Bittorrent, Fasttrack (Kazaa), Gnutella and Overnet.

The developers themselves admit the product is “somewhat controversial”, as most movies and music downloaded from these networks are illegal copies. However, since the Dutch Supreme Court ruled long ago in favor of the once Netherlands-based Kazaa and only classifies the upload of copyrighted material as illegal, the developers do not expect too much trouble. Even so, the company has set some money aside for possible legal procedures.

The Mediacenter, which was presented last weekend at a consumer trade show in Utrecht, is basically a hard disc that plugs directly into your television and provides search and download support for all the major P2P services. A “P2P spider” is constantly looking for new content, so that users won’t have to download movies or music manually. Users can select music or films on the television screen.

The first LamaBox (with 40 GB) will sell for € 279. A 400 GB version with a DVD burner will cost € 479.

The company says that there is already a lot of interest from foreign countries, but supply is limited, as all of the boxes are “handmade”.®

Sony has released the next PSP firmware, version 2.6, and this time it actually has some interesting features. This latest update’s main features include WMA support, DRM capabilities, along with a RSS Reader. The RSS reader makes the PSP one of the few MP3 players that can get and play podcasts via Wi-Fi without a computer.

Remember guys, if you want to play homebrew, DON’T UPDATE!

Do constant reruns of “I Love the ’80s” on VH1 have you ready to gouge out your eyeballs?

Then come to Al Jessup’s house — where his 5,000-plus radio and television stations from around the world beamed in by his 12 satellite dishes are bound to keep you entertained somehow.

Since 1998, the Beckley resident has amassed a collection of 12 dishes around his James Street home. He said he first just began subscribing to Direct TV and Dish Network, but he later learned that by purchasing special satellite receivers he could receive “free to air” programming from several different satellites swirling the globe. The information on how to adjust a dish and set up a receiver to pick up programming from these stations such as Galaxy 10, AMC 2 and Telestar 5 is included with these receivers.

“Up in the sky, there’s lots of free stuff,” he said.
