I was wondering if it would be possible to build a computer without spending any money. I call this the “Free PC Challenge.” The compleated PCs will be posted on this site. There is no time limit to this challenge and there isn’t any prizes.
The Rules Are:

1. The PC Must work and run Ubuntu 5.10 (breezy badger) and/or Windows XP
2. You can’t spend any money (can’t buy any parts)
3. You may not steal anything
4. you may not borrow anything
5. you may not use parts you already have
6. you don’t need any periphreals or monitor
7. Dumpster Diving is allowed
8. Your parts must come from different places. It’s okay to get a couple of parts from one place, just not all of them. (ex:No taking an almost completed PC and just slapping a video card in it.)
9. You may accept part donations.

The PC must Include: (May be onboard)

* Video Card
* Mouse and Keyboard PS2 inputs
* USB ports
* CD or DVD drive
* hardrive
* IDE cables
* power supply

Any I-Hack’ers want to give it a roll? I think I could pull this off.

Optimus mini three keyboard

We have talked about this keyboard in the past, although we were looking forward to a full size keyboard, Optimus has released a 3 key version available for preorder for $100.

Nmap has undergone many substantial changes since our last major release (3.50 in February 2004) and we recommend that all current users upgrade. Here are the most important improvements made in the 36 intermediate releases since 3.50 (See the ChangeLog for a much more detailed list):

So you’ve heard about this homebrew thing that all the cool kids have been doing, but you have already upgraded to version 2.6 of the firmware so that you could play all the latest and greatest games on the PSP. Fortunately for you, some very diligent hackers have been working round the clock to discover ways to get around the limitations put in place by the latest firmware.

The solution isn’t in the form of a downgrader, but rather in the form of an eLoader (EBOOT loader) that lets you use Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories to run homebrew on a PSP with version 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, and 2.6 of the firmware. Not all homebrew will run via this method, but there is a rather easy to read compatibility chart and I’m sure more things will begin working in future releases of the eLoader.

Proposed changes to the Police and Justice bill would make it an offense to make, adapt, supply, or offer to supply any article which is designed or adapted to impair the operation of a computer, prevent or hinder access to a computer, or impair the operation of any program or access to any data. If you’re one of the lucky folks who live in or around the yellow area pictured on the map (it’s a map of the upper 48 United States), grab the closest gadget with GPS, your EV-DO-sportin’ laptop, and the keys to your pickup, ’cause money is literally falling out of the sky all around you 24-hours-a-day. Let us explain: Apparently some regions in the South and West aren’t as wired as midtown Manhattan, so a company called Space Data found a way to make money by repeatedly launching weather balloons with cellular transmitters called SkySites, and charging what must be astronomical fees for getting your cell-on in the boonies. These eye-in-the-sky cell towers hover between 70,000 and 100,000-feet and provide coverage for a 200-mile radius on Earth- but the darn things only stay aloft for 24 to 48 hours before freefalling to the ground (or tree, or lake, or Grand Canyon). Once a balloon hits terra firma, or something close, it radios its location back to its successor in the sky, which then relays the data to the SkySite website. Since geocachers are known to be a particularly violent and rowdy bunch who would no doubt cause wanton destruction in a free-for-all pursuit of these $60 treasures, only a particular balloon’s general location is posted, and the first certified ‘cacher in the area who calls dibs gets the exact coordinates (plus or minus five decimal places) and an exclusive 48-hour window to retrieve the gear. If you think that there’s only chump change to be made here, you couldn’t be more wrong: SkySite reportedly paid out over $93,000 to its volunteer army last year, with the top earner “caching” in to the tune of $10,000.

from Reg Hardware

Microsoft last night posted its latest Xbox 360 update, which makes a handful of tweaks to the console’s system software, according to the brief list of fixes posted by Microsoft. The update adds improvements to Xbox Guide and to the Dutch Xbox Live network configuration. It also provides more detailed information on unreadable disk or region errors, increases the accuracy of ‘last time played’ readouts and provides a saved-game retention option when users profiles are removed.

The update will automatically install when users sign on to Xbox Live. ®
