Here’s a really funny way to break Notepad that a coworker showed me this morning. I bet this is one of those jokes that’s been around for ages, but this was the first I ever heard of it, so it’s new to me.
This actually works. It will not crash your computer, it just breaks Notepad in that it causes it to display very oddly. No perm damage comes of the following steps.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Open up Notepad (not Wordpad, not Word or any other word processor)
2. Type in this sentence exactly (without quotes): “this app can break”
3. Save the file to your hard drive.
4. Close Notepad
5. Open the saved file by double clicking it.Instead of seeing your sentence, you should see a series of squares. For whatever reason, Notepad can’t figure out what to do with that series of characters and breaks
Again, it doesn’t crash the app or anything, it’s just a funny little twise of fate/unintended feature

It also does this in Notepad2. This is not specific to Windows Notepad. I believe it’s just something that happens with all text files in Windows.

Doh, [ again ... ]
It appears to be an error just with WinXP’s version of notepad(s).
BUT, try it under Win98SE, and there is NO error …
If Microsoft can find a way to stuff up something that used to work - they will …
Microsoft needs to get back to the KISS principle [ Keep It Simple Stupid ], instead of shoehorning everything they can find into the OS - just to monopolise the market.

Do you mounthbreathers actually think this is a “Bug”? That MS screwed up and if you put the string (and only this string) “This app can break” it’s actually causing an error that wasn’t put in there by design? Have any of you actually programmed something more complicated than a VCR?
Wow. I think my grandmother knows more about software than these twits.

Yeesh I am sorry to say that you are an idiot and yes it is a real bug. It has to do with the way notepad deals with ANSI files. If you were to “break” the program then re-open it, delete the characters that are there then re-type this app can break and save again (this time it will default save as a Unicode) and re-open it will open correctly. So before you go shooting your mouth off check the facts.

It actually works with any of the following:(without the quotes)
“bush hid the facts”
“aa aaa aaa”
and basically almost any string of words which has a 4-3-3-5 number of chars…
Ex: “have you ben moron”
etc.
Have Fun
