I came up with this simple circuit using a LM555 timer to blink LEDs on and off:

The circuit shows 3 LEDs hooked up. Those are the red LEDs. I built 2 more circuits for the green and blue LEDs with the only difference being the 20k resistor being replaced by a 43k and 62k resistor respectively. Also not shown on the circuit diagram are pin 8 of the 555 timer which is connected to 9volts and pin 1 which is connected to ground.

The next step was to build the circuit. I used DIP8 packages of the 555 timer and axial lead resistors and capacitors on a breadboard all purchased from Ack Radio Supply down the street for about $5. Here’s what the finished board looks like:
